The name of the largest German poet Goethe (1749-1832) belongs to the best names that humanity is proud of. The tragedy Faust occupies a central place in its work, belongs to the masterpieces of world literature. Its translation is made by one of the best Russian poets of the 19th century by Athanasius Fet.
Fet from childhood in the maternal line was closely connected with the German language and German culture, with the aesthetic and philosophical views of Goethe, A. Schopenhauer and G. Hegel. The literary critic Apollo Grigoryev wrote: Goethe mainly raised the poetry of G. Fet, the understanding of the great old teacher is obliged to the understanding student of both internal virtues and the remarkable success of his poems, and, finally, the very isolating of his place in Russian literature.
The book contains selected illustrations for the Faust of Artists: German August von Kreling (1819-1876) and French Eugene Delacrois (1779-1857) and Austrian Franz Xavera Simma (1853-1918)
