Dr. Johann Faustus is the German alchemist of the first half of the 16th century, whose glory of the great warlock was so grand that folk rumor created a bizarre legend about him. This legend became part of European folklore and inspired many writers - both the Renaissance period and modern ones - but none of them managed to rise to Goethe"s heights.
Goethe Faust is not just a person who sold his soul to the devil (although the writer completely retained almost all the plot features of the legend), but the great scientist, intellectual and humanist who dreams of the happiness of all mankind and tirelessly seeking the way of achieving it. He doubts, makes mistakes, suffers failures, but continues his ascetic work.
"Faust" is a work that Goethe wrote almost all his life, with all its complexity, multifaceted, with all the fact that ancient myths, German folklore, and philosophical ideas of different times, and biblical plots were reflected in it - surprisingly fascinating reading.
