According to Stendhal, the novel “Dangerous Relations”, written in 1782, went down in history as one of the most significant prosaic works of French literature of the XVIII century. It is all the more amazing that his author, Pierre Ambroise Francois Shorelo de Lacco (1741–1803), did not at all seek to gain fame in the literary field. He was a high -ranking military man who made a significant contribution to the development and modernization of artillery systems, and during the Great French Revolution became a politician who actively advocated the deposition of the king. Several interesting works on the history of the revolution and military affairs came out of the pen Laklo, but nothing pointed out the amazing success of his only artistic work. “Dangerous ties” - a novel in letters, the main characters of which, Viscount de Valmon and the Marquis de Mertie, are desperately intriguing, wanting to take revenge on their enemies. Being typical representatives of the modern author of the aristocratic society, they act wisely, but cynical and soulless: playing at human weaknesses, without hesitation, they sacrifice the young, naive girl Cecilia Wolange. However, villainy in those days could not avoid fair retaliation ... Roman gained incredible popularity immediately after the exit from the press, it is enough to recall that the first two thousandth circulation was sold within a month, immediately followed a reprint - and this is not counting fifty counterfeit publications during Only the next two years! And in subsequent years, they did not forget about the novel - neither grateful readers, nor severe moral guardians: in 1823, “dangerous ties” were convicted by the sentence of the French Criminal Court to destroy “for insulting morality”. Later, literary critics called the novel a defiantly innovative, foreshadowing the work of Balzac and Stendhal, and the coming era of cinema gave us several excellent adaptations. In Russian, the novel was first published in 1804 under the name “harmful acquaintances, or letters collected by one society to warn others” in the translation of Alexander Ivanovich Lewanda (1765–1812), a writer who was part of the circle of I. A. Krylov and A. I. Klushina. It is noteworthy that the text was not reduced in any way, except for the preface and one frivolous scene in the third part (in this publication all the texts are restored in full) The book is decorated with 27 drawings of the famous French artist, illustrator and designer Georges Barbier (1882–1932), made by him for the next Parisian reprint of the novel
