Along with the "Three Musketeers", the novel about the life of Edmon Dantes and the adventures of Count Monte Cristo is the most famous work of Alexander Dumas, it is not by chance that he is deservedly considered the classic of French literature of the XIX century. By the time Dumas was already recognized as a recognized playwright and the author of numerous works on historical topics, however, it was the adventure novel "Count Monte Cristo" who brought him not only worldwide glory, but also financial success - after his publication Dumas, like his hero Dantes, healed on a wide leg. The idea of this work occurred to the writer during his journey through the Mediterranean Sea, when Dumas heard the legend of the treasures buried on the island of Montecristo. It is curious that Edmon Dantes had a real historical prototype - the Frenchman Francois Pico, who, according to the false denunciation of his friends, was thrown into prison. Having spent seven years in it, he dug an underground move into the neighboring camera, where a rich Italian priest languished, who told Pico about the treasures buried in Milan. Having been released, Pico got rich and dedicated ten years of his life revenge. Literary talent allowed Alexander Dumas to deploy this story into a large -scale romance with dozens of characters and an expertly twisted plot. Until now, despite the one and a half of the century, the Monte Cristo Count, has been read with unhappy interest.
The success of the novel was such that his first translations into Russian appeared almost immediately after the publication of Count Monte Cristo in France. The translation in this edition was completed in the middle of the XIX century. Vladimir Mikhailovich Kostyev, he is deservedly considered classic. Even during his lifetime, this famous historian and feuilletonist gained the glory of one of the best translators from French and German. Dumas-father was his beloved French author. In addition to the "Count Monte Cristo", Straev translated several other novels, including Viscount de Brazhelon. Stroyev lived only 50 years, having died in 1862, but thanks to his translations, his name continues to live in the history of literature.
The publication is decorated with illustrations of several artists at once: the beautiful drawer of Pierre-Gustave Staal (1817-1882), Batalist Jean-Adolf Bosu (1818-1875), a talented painter of Angei-Louis Zhana (1811-1872), graphics and cartoonist fields Havarny (1804-1866) and engraver Tony Zhoanno (1803-1852) All of them were the same age as the majority of the heroes of the novel, so the realities of that time depicted in their works acquire extraordinary historical reliability
