With the maxims of Confucius, which has become the main moral and ethical tuning for China, you can get acquainted, reading the collection of the Lun Yu ". In this collection, known in Russian culture under the name "Conversations and Judges", the advice of this sage, his judgments about life and people are given. "Lun Yu" is one of the main Confucian treatises. It was compiled by the students of the sage after the death of Confucius.
Starting from the XII century in China, the study of "conversations and judgments" has become mandatory for passing state exams. This essay claiming government posts was required to be taught by heart, because Confucius demanded strictly observe the laws and rules existing in society. However, he not only preached certain moral and ethical principles, but also lived on them. This powerful human figure, which, leaving the past, with each century of Chinese history became increasingly large -scale, can be compared with biblical Moses.
In 1687, the collection of Lun Yu ", written in the ancient Chinese language, was translated into Latin by a group of Jesuit monks, who at that time had many missions in China. Thus, the Europeans first met the figure of Confucius and began to gradually realize the scale of his posthumous influence on Chinese civilization.
The texts of "conversations and judgments" are traditionally divided into twenty chapters, called the first expression in them. In this publication, each maxim was given in alternative translations of the two largest Russian Chinese at the 19th century, corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences.
The first of them, Vasily Pavlovich Vasiliev, brilliantly graduated from the historical and philological faculty of Kazan University, and then sent to Beijing, where he lived for more than nine years, studying Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan, Mongolian and Manchu languages. As a result, by the end of the 19th century, he became the largest domestic orientalist.
Second, Pavel Stepanovich Popov, translated "Lun Yu" into Russian a little later than his colleague. He graduated from the Faculty of Eastern languages of St. Petersburg University, and then worked for a long time as part of a diplomatic mission in Beijing, translating the works of ancient Chinese philosophers, and also became the largest Russian Chitaist of his time. He compiled a fundamental Russian-Chinese dictionary, which has passed more than one publication. Its translation of "conversations and judgments" is distinguished by accuracy, expressiveness and proximity to the original.
The book also contains original hieroglyphic texts of the original source, detailed comments by P. S. Popov to each maxim.
The publication is illustrated by drawings for myths and legends from the life of Confucius with their brief presentation
