In the so -called “First Folio”, that is, the first collected works of the great playwright, printed in 1623. In England, of thirty -six plays, twelve works were attributed to tragedies. We are talking about the dramas Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, King Lear, Hamlet, Othello, Julius Caesar, Anthony and Cleopatra, Titus Andronik, Coriolain, Troil and Cressida , Timon Athenian and Tsimbelin . All of them are included in this collection. Some of Shakespeare"s tragedies are widely known and repeatedly filmed. Other plays are not so familiar to the general public. It will be no less interesting to read them, because this is literature of the highest sample. The interests of Shakespeare in Russia began to grow in the first half of the 19th century. Thanks to the productions of domestic theatrical stage. In 1830, the first prose presentation of all Shakespeare"s dramas in Russian was published. It was performed by N. Kh. Ketcher. In 1893, prosaic translations of the dramas and Shakespeare"s sonnets were published, edited by P. A. Kanshin. By the beginning of the XX century. In Russian, there were already more than a hundred translations of various works of Shakespeare. The best of them, made by A. I. Kronberg, P. I. Weinberg, A. V. Druzhinin and other outstanding domestic writers, were included in Shakespeare"s fifth full edition. It came out in 1902 and became part of the twenty -volume “Library of Great Writers”, which was published by the famous publishing house “Brockhaus and Efron”. The editor of the Libraries was the most famous historian of literature and literary critic S. A. Vengerov. He attracted the best specialists of his time to work on the publication of Shakespeare"s works. Among them were the corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences N.P. Dashkevich and A. I. Kirpichnikov, a prominent Shakespeared A.V. Druzhinin, Dr. Daith of M. N. Rozanov, a brilliant journalist and Polyglot L. A. Polonsky. They and other literary critics of the highest rank in this publication are the authors of the most interesting preface to all Shakespeare"s drama. In 1842, the famous British publisher, editor and writer Charles Knight published the voluminous volume of the “illustrated Shakespeare”. Among several artists whose work included in this book, the engraver and painter John Gilbert occupied a special place. He was a talented self -taught, which performed hundreds of magnificent illustrations to many iconic works of English literature
