Theodor Dreiser is known primarily as a novelist. Fame to him came with the first novel - “Kerry’s sister” (1900), and later, with the release of new works (Jenny Gerhardt, Financier, American Tragedy, Oplot, etc), success only Strengthened. In 1930, the Dreiser was nominated to the Nobel Prize. His work is distinguished by the courage of the image, knowledge of human nature, the severity of life situations and the unchanging humanistic pathos. In addition to the novels, the Dreiser released several collections of stories, and the novelty is the most important part of the writer"s heritage. “Chains” (1927) - one of his copyright collections. Many of the plots can be called sketches for novels, but in the stories the Dreiser is more focused on the internal experiences of his heroes: often the narrative unfolds as an internal monologue. One of the characters in Dreiser is desperately trying to break out of poverty and for the sake of this is ready to make any victims, and someone has reached wealth and high social status, but does not feel happy. “Chains” are the tragedies of individuals and at the same time instructive stories about the mortality of worldly goods.
