With the novel by Viktor Hugo "Cathedral of the Paris Mother of God", which saw the light in 1831, the Russian reading public met in the same 1831. What is not surprising: the French language in those times competent Russia often knew better than his native. Someone brought original Parisian publications, and someone used publications in the magazines "Moscow Telegraph" and "Telescope", however, in recent cases, it was only about excerpts. That"s why the translation of the novel into Russian was forced to wait for more than thirty years. It was necessary the initiative of the Brothers Dostoevsky, publishers of the journal Time, so that it was finally implemented. The transfer was made by a regular employee of the magazine Julia Petrovna Pomerantseva. Part of the text of the novel from unknown considerations (possibly censorships) was stopped in this translation: the dialogs of characters, descriptions of old Paris, etc., however, were reduced, however, all the main thoughts, scenes, plot lines remained in place and in proper order. In 1874, this translation was published by a separate book
