About the book
The novel of the classic of American literature Peter Taylor, who received the Pulitzer Prize and marked by the main world critics.
Philip Carver, a middle-aged editor from New York, receives a letter from his sisters. They call him to his home so that Philip helps prevent the marriage of their 80-year-old father with a young woman.
calls immerse the hero into painful memories of the past. Philip will return to Memphis three times, and the family story of the Carvers will grow all with new details. The self -sufficiency of the father, the financial collapse during the Great Depression and the family move from the provincial Nashville to the developing industrial memphiz, perceived by children as a betrayal, are the events of the past, about which the reader will gradually learn, as if during a leisurely evening conversation by the fireplace behind a cup of herbal tea.
The action takes place against the background of the American South, the customs of which are transmitted with knowledge, irony and love. Taylor deliberately chooses a "realistic" memoir style, thanks to which there is a deceptive impression that you can rely on the memories of the hero.
What, in our opinion, this book
About children-child relationships, about smoldering conflicts in length for a lifetime, about separation from the family, forgiveness and revenge.
On the fluidity of the time and variability of memory.
