Simadzaki Toson (1872-1943) graduated from Christian University Meiji Gakuin. Together with Tokoku, Kitamura published a literary magazine Bungakukai. Made a great contribution to the development of naturalism in Japan. Father - Masaki Simazaki, scientist.

In 1899, Simadzaki, along with his wife, moved from the capital to the Deep Province. For seven years he worked as a teacher in one of the rural schools in northern Japan. Over the years, he has seen enough on a monotonous and monotonous rural life, which later became the topic of many of his works. He was baptized, but Christianity did not have a significant influence on him.

In 1913, Toson Simazaki left for France, from where he returned only in 1916. The reason for the departure was an affair with his niece Komako, which subsequently reflected in the autobiographical novel “New Life”.

Literary activities began as a romantic poet. He wrote collections of poems “Vakana-Su” (“Young Fruits”, 1897) and “Hitoka-Bune” (“Less-Pilia”, 1898) The historical merit of the poet Simadzaki in the history of Japanese poetry in the fact that he (together with Doi Bansem) finally approved in Japan the form of the so -called “new verse” (synthasi), which sharply broke with the traditions of feudal poetry and turned into the main form of new Japanese poetry
