When on August 9, 1945 the atomic bomb “Fat” exploded over Nagasaki, Dr. Takashi Nagai worked in a university hospital near the epicenter. As soon as he got out of the dilapidated building and despite serious injuries, he began to assist the survivors along with other doctors. The report on the first terrible days after the atomic bombing formed the basis of the Bell Nagasaki.
Dr. Nagai died of leukemia two years after publication. His essay was a unique evidence of an eyewitness of disaster, and the scientist’s thought about the nature of the atomic bomb, and a humanistic appeal: this should never be repeated again
