Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) is a writer and theorist of literature, who left a mark in modernist literature not only as an author, but also as an organizer of a circle for young English -language writers. A friend of Hemingway, Picasso and each of the more or less significant personality of Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. The novel "Autobiography by Alice B. Toklas", written on behalf of a long -term companion of Gertrude Stein, can be read both as a guide to the avant -garde workshops and the stage of Paris, and as a psychological and stylistic masterpiece. In her characteristic ulcerative and witty manner of Gertrude, Stein talks about friendship with artists and writers who formed the appearance of the 20th century, romantic relations and creative searches during the years before the First World War. The book made a lot of noise among the persons mentioned in it and brought the writer a well -deserved glory. And at the same time, it became a programmatic composure of modernism. The translation of Irina Ninova allows the reader to evaluate the subtle originality of the manner of Stein. It would not be entirely true to believe that Irina Ninova translated this prose from English into Russian. She translated from one non -existent language to another - unprecedented. Of course, a special syntactic pattern, a carefully filtered dictionary, and skill and inspiration were required. Samuel Lurie
