Four parts of the novel-tetraology Alexandrian Quartet are not in vain wear the names of their main characters. The reader can look at the same events - the life of Egyptian Alexandria before and during the Second World War - through the eyes of completely different people. The sunset of colonialism, anti -British rebellion, political and private life - phenomena and people become much more understandable when you can see them at different angles. The author himself called a tetralogy an experiment on the study of a continuum and subject-object relationships on the material of modern love. In the first three books: “Justine”, “Balthazar” and “Mautolive” - these ties are gradually revealed in all its complexity and confusion, united by time and place. In the fourth book - “Clea” - the author connects the plot lines together and makes it possible to trace the development of relations and fate in time, completing the narrative
