Alexander Dumas, the son of the author of Count Monte Cristo, “Three Musketeers”, “Queen Margot”, proved that he was able to compete with the great father. At twenty -four, he wrote the novel “Lady with Camellias” (1848), which he spoke about all of Paris. The plot was based on the real story of a fateful beauty, a courtesan of Marie Dyul, who was very young from tuberculosis. The novel was converted into a play, which had a noisy success, the story of the tragic love of Margarita Gauthier and Arman Duval, eternal femininity and eternal victim, Giuseppe Verdi used in the opera Traviata. But unlike Camellia, the plot did not fade: there were three ballets, two dozen films, comics, theatrical productions - in a word, “lady with camellias” was destined for immortality.
In the 19th century, the role of Margarita Gauthier played Eleanor Duza, and in XX - Sarah Bernar, Greta Garbo, Alla Nazimova, Sarah Montel, Norma Tolmadge, Francesca Neri and Isabelle Jupper. Alexander Dumas’s novel “Lady with Camellias” is published in the translation of Marianne Taimanova
