Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was an American writer, the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his powerful and expressive art of narration and for his rare ability with satire and humor to create new types and characters." The central conflict in all of the writer's work is the conflict between the individual and society. A young and talented doctor, Martin Arrowsmith, always dreamed of dedicating his life to scientific research for the benefit of humanity. After working in private practice in a remote province, he moves on to work in a large clinic in a metropolis, and then to a position in a scientific institute. However, everywhere Arrowsmith encounters the detrimental effects of careerism among his colleagues, for whom medicine is just a profitable business. But one day, Martin is given the chance to fulfill his dreams of selflessly helping people and to test the new medicine he has created in the conditions of a deadly epidemic.
