The book by Alexander Stroyev, a professor of general and comparative literary studies, tells about the dark side of the Enlightenment era: about adventurers, alchemists, and deceivers. It is dedicated to famous adventurers and writers who visited Russia in the 18th century: Casanova, Cagliostro, d'Eon, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Chudy, Fuzhere de Monbron, the Zanovich brothers, and others. Their stories serve as a peculiar mirror reflecting not so much the consciousness, but the subconscious of society: its secret desires and hopes, fears and fantasies. In the first part, the author explores the place of adventurers in the Enlightenment's information system, their relationships with monarchs and philosophers, and in the second part, compares their biographies with the narrative models of the era, myths, and wandering plots. The concluding chapter is dedicated to the fates of those adventurers who went to Russia, seeing it as a country where the boldest utopian projects could be realized. The reader is offered the second - revised and expanded - edition of the book.
2nd edition, revised and expanded.
