The book tells the story of the legendary reconnaissance and combat formation - the GRU special forces, which can penetrate hundreds, or even thousands of kilometers behind enemy lines and return successfully after completing the assigned task. This edition covers the reasons for the creation of the first special purpose units in the 1950s (under the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR) - the GRU special forces, the selection process, training of fighters (starting from the Soviet period), and the actions of GRU special forces in real combat operations from its inception to the present day. Special attention is paid to the special skills that enable this unit to survive successfully on long-range missions. The term "survival" in relation to the GRU special forces implies their ability to maintain (or quickly restore) the ability to carry out combat tasks while conducting reconnaissance and sabotage activities, always being in full combat readiness and remaining unnoticed by the enemy. The survival of the special forces is also largely determined by the reliability (the ability to work flawlessly) of their weapons, which in turn depends on the durability of its design. This durability is reliably ensured by Russian (and previously Soviet) military gunsmiths, who have always worked closely with the special forces. The book examines the weapons used in Soviet times and currently used by the GRU special forces, including the AKS-74U assault rifle (serving the special forces for many years) and its successor, the AK-12. However, despite the importance of weapons, success in an operation is not solely dependent on them. After all, a GRU special forces soldier is primarily a scout, whose task includes working on foreign territory, survival on which is also ensured by special knowledge and skills. To operate successfully in enemy territory, one must have a clear understanding of the distinctive features of that area (country), including the local residents' mentality, national and religious traditions, culture, way of life, and even their political views. All of this requires thorough preparation, and the book discusses the main disciplines that are part of the mandatory training course for GRU special forces soldiers. These include reconnaissance actions, first aid, terrain orientation (using maps, compass, celestial bodies, local objects), use of topographic and military maps, special parachute jumps, hand-to-hand combat. In long multi-day raids, an important aspect of the concept of "survival" is the need to provide oneself with food in any situation, including the most extreme conditions that may arise in the wild. Therefore, the book pays sufficient attention to the various types of wild animals inhabiting different areas and their hunting methods. The book also mentions the most unusual part of the special forces - the GRU combat swimmers group, who operate underwater and on the enemy's coastal territory.
