The book systematically discusses all the main issues of accentology in the Russian language, step by step. The main idea on which the book is based is the necessity of distinguishing between two levels of description, namely the accent level and the stress level. Accent represents a kind of abstract recommendation to emphasize one syllable of a metrical group, while stress is the phonetic realization of this recommendation. In accordance with this idea, the first chapter describes the accent system of modern Russian, the second chapter describes the accent system of modern Russian literary language, and the third chapter is dedicated to describing the stress system. The fourth chapter describes the so-called secondary accent, followed by secondary stress. The functions of accent and stress are analyzed in the fifth chapter. The sixth and final chapter contains a description of the main stages of the evolution of the accent system in the Russian language.
