Thanks to the expedition of N. Gumilev organized in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in 1913, St. Petersburg possesses a unique collection dedicated to the material and technical characteristics of the manuscript tradition of Harar. This tradition ensured the reproduction and stable maintenance of writing over a long period and a large volume, playing a key role in the spread of Islam not only in the northeast of Ethiopia but also in the Horn of Africa as a whole. Nikolai Gumilev worked in Africa as a professional ethnographer. The poems and prose of his African cycle represent a genuine and truly unique field diary.
