The question of the state is central to all of Pierre Bourdieu's work, and it is to this question that he dedicated a three-year cycle of lectures delivered at the Collège de France, bringing together the results of his many years of research. The concepts introduced in his previous works - cultural and symbolic capital, symbolic violence, fields and spaces, practical logics - receive a new interpretation in this course on the state, presenting approaches to the sociological theory of the genesis of the European state. In a sense, the book presents a different Bourdieu; its style differs from that of his strictly scientific publications. The lecture text demonstrates sociological work in action, both in its theoretical and empirical aspects. By exposing the illusions of the "thought of the state" that seeks to reinforce the belief that the state serves the common good, Bourdieu criticizes both the anti-institutional attitude of sociologists and philosophers who reduce the state apparatus solely to serving the powerful. Of particular interest is the analysis of the dismantling of the social state, which Bourdieu interprets as a consequence of a certain struggle within the field of the state and the high-ranking bureaucracy.
