Umberto Eco (1932–2016) is the most famous Italian writer of our time, the author of world bestsellers such as "The Name of the Rose" and "Foucault's Pendulum," a cultural historian, semiotics specialist, linguist, and recipient of major awards, whose books have been translated into forty languages. "On Television" is a complete collection of articles and essays published in periodicals and books from 1956 to 2015, dedicated to television - its symbolic system and aesthetics, forms of communication and technologies used, about "persuasion strategies" and ways of critically defending against them. Tracing the path of television from the first live broadcasts of the 1950s to reality shows of the 2010s, the author reflects on its role in shaping the cultural and social environment, on what it could be if it directed its powerful energy towards serving society.
