Olga Sedakova's book "On Russian Literature" for the first time brings together her works dedicated to Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, written in different genres and in different years. This side of Olga Sedakova's creativity, as a poet, translator, philologist, and culture researcher, is less known to the reader. The authors discussed are seen and read in an unexpected light.
The book opens with a section on Pushkin: Pushkin (poet, prose writer, playwright, critic) is a constant and central subject of Olga Sedakova's research and creative reflections. The second section includes articles on prose, from Tolstoy and Dostoevsky to Veniamin Yerofeyev and Yuz Aleshkovsky. The third section consists of essays on Russian poetry from Nekrasov to Arseny Tarkovsky. The concluding fourth section is dedicated to contemporary poets, from Joseph Brodsky to Elena Shvarts. Overall, this large volume - with over fifty articles, lectures, and essays - gives the reader a unique opportunity to see Russian literature of two centuries in a new light and to ask it questions. For Olga Sedakova, this is primarily a question about the "poetic" in the broad sense of the word.
