About hysteria

The following is not a special clinical work on hysteria, there is no description of symptom complexes, their diagnosis, and treatment. The hysterical type of reaction is studied mostly as a psychological and neurophysiological problem, taken within broad biological frameworks. Details, often very interesting but at the same time very specialized, concerning the physiology of reflexes and the autonomic nervous system, may only be briefly touched upon so as not to harm the presentation as a whole.
I have tried to combine in my work the most important and fundamental ideas of the latest research on hysteria, especially those of Kraepelin and Freud, with my own data. Significant chapters from my previous works on the doctrine of hysteria have been taken, with some abbreviations and additions, from "Laws of Arbitrary Reinforcement of Reflexes" and "Volitional Apparatus of the Hysteric." Other thoughts are related to what I have presented in my "Medical Psychology," to which this work serves as a supplement. Brief practical instructions regarding examination and treatment are also provided there.
