"The Thirty-Year-Old Woman" holds an honorable place in Balzac's legacy, complementing the vivid palette of "Scenes from Private Life." The elegant and tender narrative about love in its highest manifestations at the same time became a requiem for married life. The novel's heroine, Julie, an extraordinary, independent, and emotionally liberated woman, bids farewell to youthful illusions and becomes disillusioned with marriage. After all, "it is not the sorrows themselves that often destroy us, but the lost hopes." And when one melts away from the indifference and coldness of a husband, doesn't it sometimes seem that "legitimized love is more burdensome than illicit passion"?
