This book by Nikolai Alexandrovich Leykin includes a collection of stories "Gol perekatnaya" and the novella "Kusok khleba". "Gol perekatnaya" in many ways resembles the section about Khitrovka from the recognized masterpiece by Vladimir Alexeevich Gilyarovskiy "Moscow and Muscovites", only the events take place in St. Petersburg. The author candidly portrays the lives of people who have fallen to the social bottom, huddling in corners, attics, and basements, vividly depicting the unbearable conditions of existence and widespread drunkenness. "Kusok khleba" continues the theme touched upon in the collection, providing an opportunity to look at the lives of those suffering from crop failures in villages and the lack of job opportunities in cities, ultimately doomed to either a life of poverty or dubious ways of earning a living. The author once again demonstrates excellent command of language and, despite the overall tone of the collection, enlivens the events with his keen observations.
