In the story "A Patch of Land," events unfold on a small square on the right bank of the Dniester River, where Lieutenant-Artilleryman Motovilov, along with two privates, conduct reconnaissance to determine the location of a German mortar battery. It's just a small piece of land, yet on it there is its own life, living people, and their own problems... In the novel "July of 41," the writer was one of the first to mention among the reasons for the initial defeat in the war the destruction by Stalin of the officer corps of the Red Army.
