S. M. Volkonsky (1860-1937) was an outstanding Russian theater figure, director, art historian, and critic. His book 'Man on Stage' is dedicated to exploring the issue of the actor's stage existence. The author examines questions of acting technique, expressiveness of gesture and voice, discusses the relationship between beauty and truth in portraying characters and events on stage, as well as the human being as the 'material' of art, explores the system and school of Dalcroze's rhythmic gymnastics, describes his own impressions of theatrical productions on the Moscow and Berlin stages, and touches on issues of artistic education of the individual. The book is intended for students and educators of specialized educational institutions.
