Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelev (1873–1950) was a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize, nicknamed the "Orthodox writer" for his numerous texts on the spirituality of the Russian people. While in emigration, "not for a moment in his spiritual fervor does he stop thinking about Russia and agonizing over its misfortunes." The novella "The Man from the Restaurant" brought the author "real fame" and marked the end of the first stage of his creative work. The story is told from the perspective of the waiter Yakov Skorokhodov, who has worked in this position for over twenty years. He barely makes ends meet but believes it is right to earn money through legitimate means. However, one misfortune after another befalls his family: the arrest of his son Kolya for his involvement in the revolutionary underground, the unemployment of the father, and the unfortunate situation of his daughter Natasha. Written still under the impression of the Revolution, which turned the previous peaceful life of citizens upside down, the work is full of tragic events, but it also emphasizes the importance of "awakening consciousness," reminding that blindly following the will of others is unacceptable.
