Robert Musil (1880-1942) was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. After graduating from a cadet school, he entered the Higher Technical School in Stuttgart, then studied philosophy, psychology, and mathematics at the University of Berlin. From 1924 onwards, Musil almost continuously, until the end of his life, worked on the greatest novel of the twentieth century - 'The Man Without Qualities'. Musil's skill, combining phenomenal erudition, extraordinary analytical abilities, and rare writing talent, remains unsurpassed. The main character of the novel, Ulrich, faced with the 'incredible loneliness of man in the desert of trivialities', tries to shield himself from the brilliance and poverty of the external world with the help of his self. The story of his life can be read as a meticulous study of the modern human soul, which has not lost the ability to dream and endow the world with an indefinite but significant purpose. Like another great book, Joyce's 'Ulysses', 'The Man Without Qualities' remains a challenge from the Writer to the Reader, to which every connoisseur of true Literature must respond.
