Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904) is one of the most widely read Russian writers in the world and a playwright who is more often staged on foreign stages than others. Throughout his creative life, he wrote over five hundred short stories and tales that are not inferior in depth and artistic qualities to large novels. He was the first to draw attention not to the serious quests of the hero and grand dramas, but to the everyday life.
"In Chekhov's stories, there is nothing that does not exist in reality," said Maxim Gorky. "The terrible power of his talent lies precisely in the fact that he never invents anything of his own, does not depict what does not exist in the world."
The heroes of Chekhov's stories are peasants, merchants, landowners, teachers, high school students, doctors, officials... And their social status is not important at all. The main thing is their characters, actions, their human essence.
