The anthology recreates the historical panorama of classical poetry of Japanese Middle Ages and Modern times in all its genre-stylistic diversity. The book includes masterpieces in genres such as tanka, renga, kanshi, imbu, and renga, by famous poets from the 7th to the 16th centuries, who are part of the golden fund of Japanese literature: Kakinomoto Hitomaro, Ariwara no Narihira, Ono no Komachi, Ki no Tsurayuki, Inok Sozei, Jyakuren, Fujiwara no Shunzei, Fujiwara no Teika, Saigyo, Sogi. For the first time, a massive layer of poetry by Zen masters Dogen, Muso Soseki, Ikkyu, written in Chinese, is presented to the Russian reader. The poetic world of the Edo period is represented by the works of Basho, Buson, Issa, and other remarkable haiku poets, which are juxtaposed with the lyrical and philosophical tanka of Roan, Ryokan, Kotomiti. Special color is added by selections of humorous senryu and kyoka poetry, as well as folkloric lyrics from the "merry quarters." In the section on Silver Age poetry, alongside traditional genres of lyrical miniatures, there are splendid examples of poems in new forms created by Shimazaki Toson, Miyazawa Kenji, Nakahara Chuya. The book is complemented by detailed introductory articles and commentaries. Intended for philology specialists, university professors, students, and all readers interested in Japanese literature.
