Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814–1841) was a Russian poet, prose writer, playwright, and artist. His works, with their depth and musicality, marked a new flourishing in the poetry and prose of the 19th century. "Reading every line that came from Lermontov's pen is like listening to musical chords and at the same time watching with your eyes the shaken strings, torn off by an invisible hand..." wrote V.G. Belinsky. Lermontov's works influenced his contemporaries as well as poets and writers of the following generations—they, as A.A. Blok noted, "entered into the flesh and blood of Russian literature." This collection includes selected works by the author—poems from different years, poems "Ismail-Bey," "Mtsyri," "Song about... Merchant Kalashnikov," "Demon," the drama "Masquerade," and the novel "A Hero of Our Time." The edition is accompanied by illustrations by artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries such as V.A. Polyakov, M. Zichy, V.M. Vasnetsov, and others, including some quite rare ones. The book also contains fragments of paintings and drawings by Lermontov himself.
