Ilya, a boy from a Jewish intellectual family, was drafted into the Soviet army: his parents were unable to bribe to exempt their son from conscription. Ilya ends up in a remote corner of Siberia, where for hundreds of kilometers around there are taiga forests, military garrisons, and prisons. The veteran soldiers mock the "intellectual" - after all, he is from Moscow, Jewish, and a student. Trying to survive, Ilya reflects on why everyone around him considers him an outsider, recalling family stories and legends. The choice between revolutionary spirit, conformity, and passive resistance made by his ancestors in the 20th century influences every step Ilya takes on the path to salvation. When he seems to have found the key to survival, fate unexpectedly brings him together with a mysterious prisoner from the camp. Their dialogues and brief tragic alliance help Ilya understand a lot, and this predetermines his future actions in the years of the USSR's collapse.
