Crimea holds a special place in world and Russian history and culture. It was in Crimea that Rus adopted Christianity. Throughout the Middle Ages and Modern times, the history of the peninsula and Russia often intertwined, culminating in its annexation to the Russian Empire in 1783. The peninsula has been the stage for significant events: the Crimean War, the 1917 Revolution and Civil War, the Great Patriotic War, the Yalta Conference of 1945, its inclusion in the Ukrainian SSR from 1954, its return to the Russian Federation in 2014, and more. Drawing on archival documents and the latest domestic and foreign scholarly literature, the authors provide their own interpretation of the peninsula's history from ancient times to the first two decades of the 21st century.
