In this book, the priest from Amsterdam Archpriest Sergius Ovsyannikov, along with readers, is looking for a way to freedom. Once, many years ago, Metropolitan Anthony Surozhsky, ordaining the future Father Sergius, said to him: "learn to be himself". Being free and being yourself is not the same? About this, as well as about how humanity has lost freedom, about fear and passion as dead ends on the way and creativity as an exit to the will - this book. For the author himself, the turn to internal freedom occurred many years ago in prison, there the words were heard for him: "Freedom can only be in God."
Recommended for publication by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church

From the author
Whatever we do - made great discoveries or rash acts, built a career, fell in love, created or suffered - with an honest look at our whole human life, and even the whole human history turns out that one of its main leitmotifs is a search Freedom. People constantly strive for freedom and endlessly suffer from its absence. This thirst captures all spheres of life - from art and politics to physiology and everyday life. The word "freedom" is one of the most important human words.
Where is this in our nature? And most importantly - how to become free?
In this book we will make an attempt - probably weak and insufficient - to deal with our freedom.
I am an Orthodox priest, I have been living for almost 30 years and serve in Amsterdam. One of our readers (an American by birth) says: whatever Father Sergius was talking about, he still succeeds about freedom ...
Perhaps that is why, when the publishing house asked me to write a book about freedom, I decided. I decided to go with the reader the path.
However, you should not wait for some magical moment from this book: here we will reach the next turn, and behind it - KNOW HOW. It is bad or good - but this book is not a task in mathematics with the correct answers at the end. At least with answers in the form in which we often want to find them and attach to life as a method that helps to become free.
The problem is that "lack of freedom" cannot be localized in a certain place of the soul or body, and then remove this place. Non -freedom is poured too wide in our lives.
In Christianity, life has a path traveled, not a textbook of moral problems. And this path should go through anyone to whom it is determined.
This book is conceived as "Introduction to Freedom".
Introduction - not so much as a preface, after which the main text will follow, but introduction - the passage of part of this path together with you, readers. What do you need for this path? Honesty in relation to oneself and the desire to ask questions. And you yourself. If you are - go free!
