The manual provides material aimed at developing oral counting skills on basic topics of the mathematics course for 3rd and 4th grades: multiplication and division within and beyond tables, addition and subtraction within 1000. Oral counting develops students' quick thinking and attention, fosters mathematical resourcefulness, and strengthens memory. Proper organization of oral counting exercises in elementary school involves daily and short (5 to 10 minutes) exercises. Sequential completion of the manual's tasks will help students master oral counting skills of all forms: Auditory counting. (The teacher verbally states the problem and receives the answer verbally after a few seconds.) Visual counting. (Problems are written down, and answers are either stated verbally or written by students.) Combined counting. (The teacher dictates the problems, and the student writes down the answers.) Oral problem-solving. Speed in counting arises from prolonged practice. However, the priority should be the understanding of various methods of mental calculations, rather than their mechanical application. Oral counting should precede, complement, or conclude the part of the lesson to which it is subordinated. The manual can be used in math classes, as well as for independent work at home.
