This two -volume is reprinted by a special doubled issue of the magazine "New Literary Review" (No. 83/84, 2007), dedicated to the close analysis of the last year of the existence of the Soviet Empire. The choice of 1990 as a subject of study of the recent Russian past is not accidental: it was this year, which had fallen from the cultural memory of society and pushed into the shadow "spectacular" 1989 and 1991, was the key and turning point in the latest history of Russia, its events predetermined the subsequent development of the country .
The reader is a unique project: firstly, this is the encyclopedia of late-Soviet civilization on the verge of its collapse, when the dying and extending ways of life froze in fragile equilibrium: old and new political elites, official and underground crops, totalitarian and free media, Soviet and capitalist economic practices, a repressive system and mass social movements, etc. Secondly, this is a field of scientific discussion about new interdisciplinary approaches to the study of history, about the revision of the professional tools of the researcher, on the scientific ethics and responsibility of the humanitarian environment as a whole.
The project is based on a detailed, submarine chronicle of 1990, compiled according to the Soviet press and supplemented by fragments of memoirs, biographical and bibliographic certificates, comments of eyewitnesses and experts. In addition to blocks of analytical articles describing all spheres of the life of Russia and Eastern Europe in 1990, an important part of the number was the private diaries of that era (Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, assistant M.S. Gorbachev, avant -garde artist, showmen, participant in youth unrest of 1990, Slavists etc)
