This two-volume member is reprinting a special dual issue of the magazine "New Literary Review" (No. 83/84, 2007), devoted to the steady analysis of the last year of the existence of the Soviet Empire. The choice of the 1990th year as the subject of studying the recent Russian past was ignorated: this year, which fell out of the cultural memory of society and pushed in the shadow "spectacular" 1989 and 1991, was a key and turning in the modern history of Russia, its events predetermined the subsequent development of the country .
In front of the reader, a unique project: first, it is the encyclopedia of the late civilization on the verge of her collapse, when the dying and emerging lifestyle froze in fragile equilibrium: old and new political elites, official and undergraduate culture, totalitarian media, Soviet and capitalist economic practices, repressive system and mass social movements, etc. Secondly, this is the playground of the scientific discussion on new interdisciplinary approaches to the study of history, on revising the professional tools of the researcher, the scientific ethics and the responsibility of the humanitarian environment as a whole.
The project is based on a detailed, secrets chronicle of 1990, compiled based on the materials of the Soviet press and complemented by fragments of memoirs, biographical and bibliographic references, witness comments and experts. In addition to the blocks of analytical articles, describing all the spheres of life of Russia and Eastern Europe in 1990, the private diaries of that era (the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, Assistant M.S. Gorbachev, Avant-garde artist, Showmen, Member of Youth Activities of 1990, Slavists, etc)
