George Orwell (1903-1950) protested against totalitarian social systems throughout his work. This theme was relevant in literature in the first half of the 20th century due to historical reasons, but has not lost its relevance even in our days. The dystopian novel "1984" (1949) depicts a totalitarian London of the future - a major city in Oceania, which is in a perpetual state of war with two other world superpowers. The society has a strict social hierarchy, with the majority of citizens living in poverty and under constant surveillance by the Thought Police. The main character, Winston Smith, for many years pretends to be a law-abiding official who shares the accepted political ideals. However, a sudden feeling for his colleague Julia turns his life upside down: it brings temporary happiness but also puts him outside the boundaries of the law.
