Arguably the most famous novel of the 20th century, 1984 is a dystopian exploration of political tyranny, mind control, paranoia, and secret mass surveillance. Set in Oceania, the ultimate totalitarian state, it depicts a society oppressed by a ruling party led by Big Brother. In their quest to eliminate all forms of individuality, people's lives are under constant surveillance. Telescreens are omnipresent, helicopters monitor buildings, peeking through windows, and the Thought Police remain vigilant. Despite the severe consequences, Winston Smith, a member of the Outer Party, takes a risk by pausing his job of rewriting history. In the privacy of a hidden corner in his apartment, shielded from the telescreen, he begins to write a diary. The cultural impact of George Orwell's masterpiece continues to be relevant even today.
