George Orwell is one of the most widely read authors in the world and a very controversial figure of his time. Born in Bengal, educated at Eton, he worked in the police, on the radio, and in a second-hand bookstore, fought in Spain, and wrote books. A staunch opponent of communism and a defender of democratic socialism, Orwell rebelled against the society he so desired to be a part of, but in which he felt completely alienated.
The book presents four different works by Orwell: his early novels "Burmese Days" and "A Clergyman's Daughter," as well as the internationally renowned satirical allegory "Animal Farm" and the dystopian novel "1984."
Orwell's first novel, "Burmese Days," is based on his experience working in colonial Burma in the 1920s and sparked heated debates due to its sharp portrayal of colonial society. "A Clergyman's Daughter" introduces a completely different side of Orwell - a master of psychological realism and captivating plot.
The allegorical novella "Animal Farm" is full of sharp sarcasm and political satire. The farm's inhabitants embody the worst human vices, and the farm itself becomes a symbol of a totalitarian society. The issue of totalitarianism gained broader significance in "1984" - Orwell's final novel, alongside Zamyatin's "We," Huxley's "Brave New World," and Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451." What will happen if fascist and dictatorial ideas spread among the ruling circles? What will society become if power demands unwavering obedience? What catastrophe will such a regime lead to?
