"The book by Alexander Nekrich '1941. June 22' is advisable to be removed as a politically harmful publication." Thus, the publication of this truly legendary book in the USSR ended with a ban, destruction of the print run, exclusion of the author from the party, and his emigration to the USA. Although it was the work of A.M. Nekrich (1920-1993) that sparked broad public interest in the reasons for the tragedy of 1941, and the author of the cult book 'Icebreaker,' Viktor Suvorov (Vladimir Rezun), later only exploited the hot topic. The book, printed in the Soviet Union with a huge print run for today's standards, was written by a man who believed in the ideals he had to defend on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. As a professional historian, Alexander Nekrich skillfully managed to paint a broad picture of the situation preceding the start of Operation Barbarossa - from military-economic preparations for the attack, international politics (such as the peace treaty with Great Britain and contacts between the Finnish and German general staffs in the winter of 1940-1941) to the Nazi plans for the destruction of the peaceful population of the USSR.
