Is there any sense in the concept of "contemporary art of St. Petersburg"? After all, contemporary art itself surrenders to museums with each passing decade, and its place of action is never constant. Meanwhile, the St. Petersburg text has been growing for centuries, making the city a birthplace of thought in the events of art. The axis of Ekaterina Andreeva's book is drawn through the events of art that are interconnected by the task of reconnaissance and transportation into the future of images safeguarding life from entropy. It traverses the layers of the avant-garde of the 1910s, nonconformism of the 1940s-1980s, art of the new reality of the 1990s-2010s, intersecting the personal stories of Mikhail Matyushin, Alexander Arefiev, Evgeny Mihnov, Konstantin Simun, Timur Novikov, and other artist-thinkers who transform life in constant "self-design," in the recreation of the cosmos. The plot of this book, composed of articles from the 1990s-2010s, is the interaction of St. Petersburg's topos and logos in the turbulent history of the Modern Age. Ekaterina Andreeva is a candidate of art history, a doctor of philosophical sciences, an art historian and curator, a leading researcher at the Department of Modern Trends of the State Russian Museum.
