The Soviet Union was a large and powerful state that occupied one-sixth of the Earth's landmass and was a true factory of achievements. In any field, whether it be science, defense, culture, or sports, there was something to be proud of in the USSR! The first and main achievements of the Soviet era in the 1920s were the electrification of the entire country, the eradication of illiteracy, overcoming the consequences of the revolution and the Civil War. Education and healthcare became free for all Soviet citizens. The 1930s marked the beginning of grand construction projects: the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station was put into operation, and the White Sea-Baltic Canal was built. The 1940s were marked by victory over fascism and the beginning of the country's reconstruction. Among the achievements of the 1950s were the successful testing of the hydrogen bomb, the launch of the atomic icebreaker "Lenin," and the development of the virgin lands of Kazakhstan, the Volga region, the Urals, Siberia, and the Far East. The "Space Decade" of the 1960s was a time of Soviet space victories, starting with Yuri Gagarin's flight. The 1970s and 1980s were the triumph of Soviet culture and sports: the fame of Russian ballet and hockey resounded worldwide, and the Olympics were held in Moscow. The USSR was truly ahead of the rest of the world! We have no reason to be ashamed of our recent past, as there is much to be proud of! But the greatest achievement of the USSR was its people, kind, responsive, sincere, always ready to help others without seeking personal gain. In their majority, they were kind, educated, cultured, and well-read.
